Your Child

We offer both Small Group Tuition and Individual Tuition for ages 4 and up, Monday to Saturday, all year round. Small Group Tuition is often more effective than Individual, or One-to-One, Tuition – and it’s more cost effective too. If you’re new to Small Group Tuition you can read more about it here. Read on below for more information about how we can help your child throughout their school career.

The day your child goes to school for the first time is a milestone for you both. The learning journey is full of challenges. Let us go with your child on that journey. We can give the support needed when even the youngest children face problems. If your child lacks confidence, is young for the year, is feeling overwhelmed, or you have any other concerns, act now. We can help.

Written for us by language experts, this carefully graded, fun to do, early reading programme will introduce your child to the wonderful world of books. Starting with letters, the building blocks of language, I Can Read teaches your child how to build words and sentences and gives them the confidence they need to read and write independently.

If your child is not reading yet and you are concerned, I Can Read is the answer.

Designed exclusively for use in our Centre, this innovative new approach to early maths will introduce your child to the concept of number. This essential first step towards understanding maths is frequently overlooked in a child’s learning development. I Can Count can be used in conjunction with I Can Read, giving your child a firm foundation on which to build.

For any child who is not confident with numbers, I Can Count is the answer.

Year 2 marks the start of possibly the most important five years in your child’s life. Making new friends, and settling in to Primary School is a big challenge but vital to your child’s ability to learn. You will soon know if something’s wrong. If your child isn’t keeping up at any point in Key Stage 1 or 2, don’t wait for the problem to go away or the teacher to ring an alarm bell. We offer effective support in all aspects of Reading, Writing and Maths.

A good grasp of reading is essential for your child to make the most of their education. There are many reasons that children might struggle to learn to read when they are first taught, and this has a knock-on effect on all other areas of their learning. Our reading programme combines state-of-the-art educational software with traditional pencil and paper activities to get your child reading – quickly, and with enjoyment.

Part of your child’s initial assessment will be done using specially written software which will identify any weaknesses in your child’s language processing abilities. Widely used in Europe, this programme was written by linguists and educational psychologists and has proved very successful with young children. By targetting areas of reading development such as phonological awareness, sequencing and visual memory, this software achieves rapid results.

A weekly programme using a custom profile on this software combined with a variety of carefully chosen exercises to target reading, comprehension, and other aspects of language development, they will be helped to master those areas which are causing problems.

Writing has two distinct aspects: the physical act of handwriting, and the art of composition – making up sentences, paragraphs, and texts. Both of these aspects are equally important and taught seriously at our Centre.

Handwriting – being able to use a pencil or pen to write with – is crucial in the development of children’s language memory, fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Missing out this stage and going straight to using a keyboard will affect your child’s ability to learn. For this reason, children who are struggling with handwriting follow a structured programme at the Centre.

Composition – being able to put your thoughts into words – is the third step in the process of using language: reading, understanding and responding. Your child may have lots of good ideas but be unable to get them onto paper for other people to read, meaning that they can’t demonstrate what they know. Our experts have written a carefully structured programme of Reading Comprehension, Grammar and Spelling which will give your child the tools they need to express themselves.

This is the stage for building the basics for your child’s future.  We will provide:

– strong foundations
– structured learning
– confidence building
– consistent support
– reachable goals
– lasting improvement.

Don’t let maths be like a foreign language to your child.

When you bring your child for their personalised maths assessment, you will be amazed. First – it will be fun. Second – we will immediately identify their strengths and weaknesses. Third – we will outline in detail a personally-designed, confidence-building programme of work. And your child will be saying “When can I start, mum?”

With their personalised programme of work, and their expert supportive teacher, your child can look forward to greatly increased confidence, enthusiasm and lasting improvement in maths.

Many parents go into the stressful process of preparing their child for the 11+ with little or no knowledge of what is involved. Children have only one chance to succeed at this test and we have made it our mission to help you and your child to get it right. The Exeter Tuition Centre offers comprehensive support for you and your child to ensure a worry-free journey through this critical time.

If you are considering the 11+ for your child, it is usually advisable to come for a Taster Session at the beginning of Year 4 – every year we meet many children who have the potential but have started preparing too late. For most, Year 4 and the start of Year 5 are crucial for laying the foundations for 11+ success.

When we meet at your child’s FREE Taster Session, we will give you an honest appraisal of your son or daughter, and of what will need to be done to maximize their chances of passing. Then we will put in place the programme you need. You can be as involved as you wish, or leave it all to us – it’s up to you.

Enrolling at Exeter Tuition Centre will ensure that your child is prepared for life at grammar school, not just the 11+ exam itself. Attention to detail, focus and concentration, independent motivation and aspiration are all fostered during your child’s sessions – before we even introduce the assessment papers. When they do start working on the papers (which can involve Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Maths and English depending on the school’s specific requirements) most children thoroughly enjoy the challenge, and as such the process is as stress-free as possible.

To ensure continuity right up to the exam we are open all year round, Monday to Friday after-school and on Saturday mornings – including half terms and the Easter and Summer holidays.

Weekly verbal feedback keeps you fully informed about your child’s progress. When your child starts working on the practice assessment papers, we will provide all the advice and support you need to help your child at home.

Experience and Effectiveness – that’s what we offer you and your child for the 11+ journey.

It’s hard to know how well your children are doing at school when they go up into Year 7. Throughout Primary School you’ve been part of their daily life. Now, they’re growing up and communication channels can begin to shut down. If you are worried that your son or daughter might not be doing as well as they could, why not book a free Taster Session? If it turns out there is a problem, we offer sensitive, appropriately paced, non-threatening tuition in all aspects of English, Maths and Science at our Centre in Exeter.

From Year 7 onwards, children need a wide range of skills in the English language to do well at school. By the start of Year 7 they should be reading fluently, be able to understand what they’ve read and answer simple questions, be able to construct grammatically correct sentences and paragraphs, and their handwriting and spelling should be continuing to improve. If these basics aren’t in place, children will struggle with most other subjects too. Your child’s first school report may highlight problems like these.

Years 7, 8 and 9 still present an opportunity for you to get help for your child – even if they seem resistant. Resistance to help is often a sign of embarrassment or fear of failure, and hides a genuine desire to learn. Don’t wait too long. A habit started now will become part of their routine. Bringing them for tuition from Year 7 can help them overcome problems which if left too long will never be overcome.

Part of your child’s initial assessment will be done using specially written software which will identify any weaknesses in your child’s language processing abilities. Widely used in Europe, this programme was written by linguists and educational psychologists and has proved very successful with children who are having difficulties.  By targeting areas such as spelling and vocabulary development, sentence structure and comprehension, this software achieves rapid results. For children who have been diagnosed with, or who are suspected of having, dyslexia, this programme achieves superior results.

A weekly programme using a custom profile on this software combined with a variety of carefully chosen exercises to develop skills in reading, comprehension, and other aspects of the use of language, they will be helped to become confident and secure in the use of the English language.

This is the stage when targets are set.  Now your son or daughter needs:

– a thorough understanding of the basics
– a good grasp of maths concepts
– enthusiasm and commitment to learning
– structured, logical work programmes.

With these tools those vital targets at GCSE will be reached or exceeded.

Give your son or daughter the best chance of success.

How?

After an honest assessment of your child’s current level of learning, we will offer:

First – experienced and friendly teachers.

Second – effective, tried and tested methods.

Third – the latest technology in maths teaching

With their personalised programme of work, and their expert supportive teacher, your child can look forward to greatly increased confidence, enthusiasm and lasting improvement in maths.

But my child has always struggled with maths!

By this stage children and their families have often given up if they have always struggled with maths, but don’t despair. It’s often the case that children know a lot more than they realise, and with expert tutoring to put the pieces together into a complete picture they can make impressive progress. It’s also often the case that they are now ready to learn concepts they just couldn’t understand when they were in primary school – but it seems too late, because the curriculum has moved on. Our system will ensure that your child goes over the ground that they missed the first time, and show them how concepts like fractions, decimals and percentages fit together so that they are easier to learn and remember.

But my child has never had a problem before!

In Key Stage 3 many children also face problems in maths for the first time.  This is often because they’ve been relying on mental maths throughout primary school, and have not develped the written methodology which is essential to tackle harder questions.  Suddenly they find themselves struggling – and to make them feel worse, some children who used to struggle will be finding their feet and catching them up. If this is happening to your child, the sooner it is addressed the better. We will create a programme to give them the tools they need to continue to demonstrate their potential in maths.

But don’t leave it until Year 10 – at that point the work steps up for the GCSEs and it’s a lot more to expect of your child to catch up and keep up at the same time.

We offer comprehensive support in all aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. From making sure your child has a solid understanding of the concepts, to showing them how to answer questions using accurate scientific language – and everything else in between – we can help your child to excel in the Sciences at Key Stage 3 and to prepare for excellent results at GCSE.

Since problems in Science at Key Stage 3 are often the result of problems in English and/or Maths, when your child comes in for their Taster Session we will always offer to check their core skills in these areas too. If help in English or Maths is needed, we will work with you to create the best plan of action for your child.

Things are still changing in the world of GCSEs and A-Levels. Getting the right grades in GCSE English, Maths and Science is more vital than ever. Depending on the school your child goes to, they may find themselves starting their GCSEs in Year 9, and Years 10 and 11 will be packed full of pre-mocks, mocks, and revision classes. School will be busy fitting in everything the exam specifications require – too busy to go back over work which has already been covered. If you have doubts about your child’s ability to keep up with these pressures from school, we can provide the support and encouragement they need.
At GCSE level, our Small Group Tuition classes are specifically designed to give your child the opportunity to go back over ground they “should” already know, and to practice it there and then until they’ve mastered it. For example, if they’ve never got to grips with fractions and long division, or their punctuation and spelling is letting them down, or the difference between an atom, an element and a compound is causing confusion, they are thrilled when they realise how much easier it is to learn things – in the right environment – now that they’re that much older.
Our GCSE and A-Level Individual Tuition classes are for students who wish to make rapid progress with the help of a tutor who will guide them along the way. Supporting the topics that they’re covering at school, reviewing school assignments and tests, engaging in more in-depth discussion of complex concepts, teaching revision technique, preparing study plans, and practising past papers – all of this and more will be included, whichever subject your child is studying.

If you are over 18 and are either studying or thinking about studying for a GCSE, A-Level, or other qualification we can help!

A free 30 minute consultation with your chosen tutor will answer all of your questions and if necessary help you to make sure that you’re enrolled with the best exam board and following the best specification. We can also help you with revision technique, and work with you to create a plan of study to ensure that you’re completely ready for your exam.

“Thank you ever so much for all your help I just got accepted on the course.”

They have offered me a place!!!!! All that hard work paid off!! I’m so happy and very relieved!!

Couldn’t of gone to a better place to gain my confidence in maths which I had struggled with for many years! … I couldn’t put into words how much I would recommend this place!
